Secretary Perdue will serve as the chairman of the interagency task force on agriculture and rural prosperity according to the executive order which "ensures the informed exercise of regulatory authority that impacts agriculture and rural communities". "Governor Perdue's leadership is desperately needed", said Stabenow, who voted for the nominee.

Following reports Wednesday that an executive order is being prepared that would withdraw the United States from the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), Moore warned in a statement that such a move could have disastrous consequences for the nation's leading agricultural export in light of the still-struggling US agricultural economy.

Refusing to call it a pathway to citizenship, Perdue says he would like to find a solution that would allow workers in the ag industry to remain in the USA legally. "I look forward to working with the task force and will continue to promote policies to benefit Nebraska agriculture and rural America".

"As secretary, I will champion the concerns of farmers, ranchers, foresters, and producers, and will work tirelessly to solve the issues facing our farm families", Perdue said.

"The people who are on the front lines of American agriculture don't have the luxury of waiting to tend to their crops and livestock, so there was no better time to convene this meeting of the minds than on my first day", Perdue said.

But Trump focused more on his recent trade actions, particularly in response to the trade dispute with Canada.

Trump's comments are part of his larger plan to take a firm stance on trade with Canada.

President Trump signed executive order Revitalize Agriculture and Promote Rural Prosperity in America on Tuesday.

"While on balance NAFTA has been good for American agriculture, we think it can be improved", Perdue says. Soybean farmers sent more than $2.5 billion in soybeans, meal and oil to Mexico previous year, making it our number two market overall and the leading purchaser of US meal and oil. Or perhaps the Trump Administration would direct the Department of Homeland Security to order Immigration and Customs Enforcement to exercise prosecutorial discretion to resist deporting all of the people they arrest, he says. "We hope that ends today, and we congratulate Secretary Perdue on his confirmation".

Also, a diverse group of farmers and ranchers from across the country met this week with President Trump, Vice President Pence and Secretary Perdue at the White House. "Farmers led the way across the Great Plains, and put down roots from coast to coast".
