Japan to extend unilateral sanctions against North Korea

North Korea has continued its threat against the US and South Korea despite several warnings from the global community.

The North is strategically important to Beijing, whose relations with South Korea are growing strained over a USA anti-missile system being deployed on the Korean peninsula.

From past year, North Korea took the rare step of publicising images of its missile equipment tests, convincing analysts that Pyongyang's banned programme was further along toward successfully testing an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) than first thought.

Repeated provocations from the DPRK and its progressing nuclear ambitions have placed it firmly at the top of the agenda for US President Donald Trump and China's President Xi Jinping as they meet today at Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. North Korea's talk of having nuclear capable warheads is also considered extremely doubtful given their current level of technology.

Working-level defense officials of the three countries held a video conference earlier in the day to discuss the North's missile launch Wednesday. Twenty-five years ago, the US removed its nuclear deterrent in the region, but Mark Lippert, the former U.S, ambassador to South Korea, said that the proposal has majority support in South Korea. The North won 2-1. The move away from the doctrine was largely the result of cuts to military spending and insufficient capability to carry out two simultaneous ground wars, such as the United States did in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"Trump intends to tell Xi that Beijing needs to help contain North Korea, or Pyongyang may face similar consequences", he said.

The launch was North Korea's latest in a long series of missile and nuclear tests that have accelerated in their variation and intensity over the last two years.

"Swaggering as a superpower, the USA has been picking only on countries without nuclear weapons and the Trump administration is no exception", the foreign ministry spokesman said, according to KCNA.

In 1969, President Richard Nixon had to decide how to respond when North Korea shot down a United States spy plane with the loss of 31 American personnel.

Earlier in the day, Trump said that "tremendous progress" was made in USA relations with China.

North Korea is expected to stage a massive military parade on April 15, and possibly use the event to showcase its latest weapons, including a new intercontinental ballistic missile, according to South Korean officials.

"China has great influence over North Korea".

"In the long term, U.S. military actions overseas won't help curb the North's nuclear pursuit", Kim said.

"The US missile attack against Syria is a clear and unforgivable act of aggression against a sovereign state and we strongly condemn this", KCNA quoted an unnamed spokesman for the North Korean foreign ministry as saying.
