Social media users were divided on how offensive the meme was.

Many users have asked Katy Perry to take the picture down.

One Instagram user wrote, "This is a little offensive to the Hindu community because the meaning behind this photo and god symbolises something different".

American singer Katy Perry drew flak after she uploaded a photo of Goddess Kali on her Instagram page and captioned it, "Current Mood". It was reported that the couple stayed at the Oberoi Vanyavilas hotel during the wedding, and posted an image together outside the Taj Mahal. You can have any kind of mood what you want but you must respect other religion also!'

"U should not show Ur emotions or feelings in the name of goddess or their images bcoz we Hindus worship them images of God are not a toy better remove it (sic)", wrote Satya Prasanna.

One commented: 'Are you serious? I may be wrong to many of you who think this is a light matter but what of the amount of culture people are mimicking without a single ounce of knowledge.

One user wrote: "Please Katy!".

Others continued to condemn the Chained to the Rhythm singer by saying: "The fact that Katy Perry is using Hindu gods as supposedly amusing memes & disregarding their importance in other people's culture is so gross".

Perry, who has 63.5 million followers on Instagram, posted the image of goddess Kali on her wall on Tuesday night and next day found the post bombarded with comments that criticized her act.

Others were less understanding, with much of the outrage focusing on her caption and her taking the image, which is commonly used on calendars in India, out of context. I pray all the time - for self-control, for humility.

In 2010, she married her former husband Russell Brand in a lavish Hindu ceremony in India.
