Essential is hoping to combat this by planning on launching an entire line of home electronics (a speaker coming) tied together by the the company's proprietary Ambient OS, which is created to offer all the benefits of wired devices without the creepiness of Google or Apple listening to everything you say. The Essential Phone has edge-to-edge display, a uniquely designed front facing camera, and a highly thin bezel design. "We believe titanium is the ideal material to create one of the most essential things in our lives - one we all sometimes drop", Essential Products, the company behind the phone, says on its web site. Also missing is any logo or branding: "Devices are your personal property".

The Android creator is launching the new phone, which comes with some impressive features, alongside a new Essential Home smart speaker which looks like it might give the Amazon Echo a run for its money.

Essential plans to announce a ship date for the devices in the next few weeks. For a limited time, the 360-degree camera accessory is available for $50 (a $150 discount from its $200 full retail price). The optional accessory is capable of capturing 4K 360-degree video at 30 frames per second. The back of the device is made of ceramic.

The phone is no slouch when it comes to performance.

As for the Essential Phone's innards, the handset is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor alongside 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, according to The Verge.

At first glance, the phone is impressive, and more or less fits in with its top-of-the-line competitors.

It also supports some but not all Canadian carrier frequencies and bands. Basically, this is a pledge that the Essential Phone will be regularly updated.

As a high-end phone, it's priced at the same level as the iPhone 7, Galaxy S8 and Google Pixel. There's also a magnetic charging dock accessory. The Essential home assistant is a small circle with a screen, that can be activated by voice, touch or look, the company said. Now he has two gadgets of his own: the Essential Phone and the Essential Home.

At launch, the Essential Phone is set to cost $700 United States dollars (approximately $943 CAD) unlocked. For instance, we don't know what type of third-party integrations will be available, how much Essential Home will cost, or even when it might get released.

Correction: an earlier version of this mistakenly said the Essential Phone would not be compatible with Freedom Mobile LTE network.
