When the Cascade County Sheriff's Deputies learned about the tragic death of Broadwater County Sheriff Mason Moore, they immediately reached out to their sheriff's department to lend a hand.

Gallatin County Sheriff Brian Gootkin said the incident began Tuesday morning when Moore was pursuing a white SUV near Three Forks shortly before 3 a.m.

A statewide alert was issued for the suspect vehicle and it was spotted near Anaconda where a pursuit began. Officers put spike strips on the road that the vehicle ran over them but continued another 30 miles (48 kilometers) on Interstate 90.

Gootkin says the passenger got out and shot at officers who returned fire. His 38 year old son was shot in the head by law enforcement. His condition was unclear.

Missoula County officials say the driver, 61-year-old Lloyd Barrus, was arrested on suspicion of deliberate homicide.

Two men, one from Gallatin County, were later apprehended by Butte Silver-Bow Sheriff's Office and are in custody in Missoula County.

"It's hard to adequately describe how devastating it feels to lose one of our own in the line of duty", said Sheriff Wynn Meehan.

They are Marshall Barrus, 38, of Gallatin County and Lloyd Barrus, 62, whose last known address was in Bakersfield California. Barrus is the father of the other suspect, Gootkin said.

According to the state's Public Safety Officer Standards and Training office, Moore had previously worked for the Department of Transportation's Motor Carrier Services from 2012 to 2015 before joining the Broadwater sheriff's office. It's something that's always in the back of their minds as law officers.

The suspects came out of their auto and started shooting at officers.

At this time, Highway 287 from I-90 to MT 2 is closed out of Three Forks as the investigation continues. "During this week of remembrance, please do me a favor and smile and wave when you see a peace officer - we could use it!"

The suspects took off from the scene then later were pursued by other law enforcement officers.

The name of the Broadwater County deputy has not been released.

Law enforcement personnel investigate the scene of a shootout on Interstate 90 east of Missoula following a high-speed chase Tuesday, May 16, 2017. The passenger was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound.
