It ticks off a list of Cornyn's policy stances: He voted for DeVos for U.S. Education secretary and against expanding a children's health insurance program.

The protests - or the reactions to them - often make national headlines and are something officials have to take seriously.

Cornyn, a former Texas Supreme Court justice and attorney general, knows how special college graduation can be for families. In Washington, the speculation turned on who would rise to the majority whip position in the Senate.

The Trump administration is moving quickly to select the next director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation after interviewing several candidates over the weekend.

Kelly Ayotte: Ayotte, a former New Hampshire attorney general who lost her seat in the US Senate past year, has been pushed by some of her Senate colleagues and some Republican advisers to the White House who believe that she would easily be confirmed. "That's a ridiculous position", Cornyn said May 10, the day after Comey was sacked. But the FBI mission has changed drastically since the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, with the bureau now as much a part of the nation's intelligence apparatus as it is a law enforcement body.
