All talk, few trades before NHL's expansion roster freeze

The NHL is now under a trade freeze that lasts until Thursday at 8 a.m., with teams only allowed to make trades with the Golden Knights.

In addition, the Vegas front office owns a lot of bargaining power in being able to offer not to select certain players in exchange for different assets. Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury made headlines this week, waiving his no-movement clause so that he can be made available.

All first- and second-year professionals, as well as all unsigned draft choices, will be exempt from selection and don't need to be included on a team's protected list.

The NHL Expansion Draft will take place on Tuesday, and teams had to submit their list of protected players to the league on Saturday afternoon. Here's what they said about teams in their market.

Then comes the start of free agency, which opens on July 1.

Remember, the Devils can only lose one of the players below.

The balance McPhee must strike, he admitted, is between stockpiling draft picks and prospects for the future with icing a competitive team in a new and nontraditional market for next season. He is an arbitration-eligible restricted free agent, was a (somewhat) healthy scratch in two straight elimination playoff games, and Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson is expected to be in the fold for a full-time National Hockey League spot next season. Its a possibility. But trades are way easier talked about than to do.”.

The Calgary Flames roster is filled with quality forwards, but not everyone can be protected in the upcoming expansion draft. He'll be the protected goalie, putting Cam Ward and Eddie Lack on the expansion list. Darling will have a $4.15 million salary next season while Ward is due $3.3 million and Lack $2.75 million. By signing Ben Smith to a $650,000 deal, he becomes eligible for the draft. Friday, June 16: Deadline for a player to waive his no movement clause for the purposes of being exposed in the Expansion Draft. Enstrom, who has spent 10 seasons playing for the Jets and Atlanta Thrashers, is heading into the final year of a contract that pays him $5.75 million and he's not producing almost as much offence as he was when he signed the deal.

The Carolina Hurricanes' Eddie Lack (31) reacts after the New York Islanders' Andrew Ladd (16), a former Hurricane, scored a power play goal against him during game against the New York Islanders at PNC Arena on April 6, 2017.

The Golden Knights must select at least three goalies in the draft but could select more. To save its top-two defense pairings, the Nashville Predators opted to protect eight skaters, which meant leaving James Neal, a 23-goal scorer this season, unprotected.

"Everyone's a little nervous, they're a little reluctant", Florida Panthers GM Dale Tallon said on Toronto's TSN 1050.

We'll know for sure on Wednesday night, but Fleury ought to be the center-piece of the Las Vegas team.

McPhee will be fielding many offers in the next few days as teams try to keep available players from being drafted.
