Speaking on Messi, who has lost four major finals with Argentina, the 57-year-old said: "I had to face Messi [with both Chile and Sevilla]. I spoke to him and he is very excited".

"To Mascherano, we have intentions that he plays central defender, like with Barcelona", Sampaoli said.

Sevilla have confirmed coach Jorge Sampaoli has departed to take charge of Argentina after compensation to trigger the release clause in his contract was received.

Argentina now lie fifth in their qualification group and only the top four automatically go through to the finals.

Sampaoli has been linked with the job for a couple of months and that grew when Edgardo Bauza quit the Albiceleste.

"Playing a World Cup is complicated", said Sampaoli.

His first test is far more pressing, with Argentina sitting fifth - the play-off spot - in qualifying for Russian Federation 2018. The fulfilling of a dream that I've craved for a long time.

The Argentine football team, that boasts of some of the biggest superstars of the game such as Messi, Sergio Aguero, Angel di Maria, Gonzalo Higuain and so on, have been embroiled in instability. "There are some very good teams trying to do the same thing as us", added Sampaoli.

"Sevilla FC wishes Jorge Sampaoli luck and success in his new professional adventure and thanks him for the services done during the 2016-17 campaign". He leaves with his squad for Australia where Argentina will go on a two match friendly tour.

Sampaoli was offered the Argentina job last August shortly after taking the helm of Sevilla but made a decision to remain in charge of the La Liga club.
