Illinois House approves minimum wage hike

"We're quite pleased with the announcement and the opportunities it brings to our community for sustainability and innovation as well as just giving people the opportunity to participate in society", she said in an interview shortly after Liberal Premier Kathleen Wynne announced planned changes to Ontario's Employment Standards Act and Labour Relations Act.

In his lead debate, Gbajabiamila who blamed the continuous clamour for increased minimum wage by workers across the country on inflation, adding that the first review shall be effective from January 1, 2017 irrespective of the day the bill comes into force.

It will establish fairer rules for scheduling so employers will be required to pay three hours' wages if they cancel a shift with less than 48 hours' notice. Now it is only available to employees at companies with more than 50 people, but proposed legislation would ensure all employees in the province get 10 days per year, two of them paid.

"The reforms outlined in the Changing Workplaces Review cautioned that any regulatory change shouldn't impair the competitiveness of businesses, however, with Chatham-Kent's economic drivers created largely in farming, agriculture and small business, I have concerns this will punitively affect these businesses, their competitiveness and abilities to continue their growth trends locally", said chamber chair Christopher June.

The legislation, which has been much discussed on Reddit, Facebook, and Twitter since being announced Tuesday, will give employees the right to take up to 10 days of personal emergency leave each year, two of them paid.

It's unclear whether Gov. Bruce Rauner will sign the bill.

"Most of our good-paying manufacturing jobs have gone", he said.

The Ontario Federation of Labour, on the other hand, has come out in support of the proposed changes.

"Wage line is one of the largest operational lines small businesses have to manage", he said.

Ontario is committed to moving forward in a balanced way. Supporters hope the hike will help Illinois employees working minimum wage jobs, but the Illinois Retail Merchants Association warns that it could hurt more than help.
