Major League Baseball hands down suspensions, fines for Nationals-Giants brawl

It was the first time Harper had been tossed for fighting in a game.

Torre gave Strickland a six-game suspension for hurling a 98 miles per hour fastball at one of the best players in baseball over a pair of home runs hit three years ago in a playoff series that Strickland's team won.

Roark (5-2) ran his career record to 6-0 against the Giants by scattering six hits and a walk. He's been one of the San Francisco Giants best relief pitchers the past three years.

There are still two games left in the series between the two teams in San Francisco - next up is Tuesday night at 10:15 p.m. ET. The Nationals won the game 3-0.

What was most interesting about this interview, however, was the topic of yesterday's brawl in San Francisco. San Francisco then went on to win the World Series.

"I didn't expect anything different".

"You never want to get suspended or anything like, but sometimes you just got to go and get them and can't hesitate", Harper said, according to the AP. I actually like the cold weather. Samardzija, a former Notre Dame football player, is 1-6 on the season with a 4.72 ERA.

The two players have a history, stemming from two home runs Harper hit off Strickland in the 2014 playoffs.

Gonzalez did all that while braving the cool temperatures at the Giants' waterfront ballpark, opting to go without a long-sleeve shirt under his jersey.

And the important question is the one Nationals manager Dusty Baker asked on Harper's behalf after the game: "What's a man supposed to do?" Both players exchanged punches to the head before teammates joined the fracas.

Instead, the helmet slipped out of Harper's hand and traveled in the direction of first base. He acknowledged that's not what it looked like, given their encounters from three years ago, the only times they had ever faced each other. He was the only Washington starter without a hit.

"Samardzija saw blood a little bit, I thought", Harper said.

The Nationals tacked on single runs in the sixth and eighth innings, both off the bat of Murphy.

"It is extremely hard for Buster not to get in that pile". "They're a tough lineup and good things happen when you put the ball in play".

Nationals closer Koda Glover worked a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out two, for his sixth save.

If the situation were to arise in Cleveland, count Manager Terry Francona among those who might take the Buster Posey approach and enjoy his view. I know the kid hit him on goal because I'd umpired him before, and his strike-ball ratio was about 3.5-1.

Washington Nationals starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez throws against the San Francisco Giants in the first inning of a baseball game Tuesday, May 30, 2017, in San Francisco. He added a two-run double in the second. So, already, Harper is missing more action, even if he's missing fewer games, and the Nats are being punished far more greatly by Harper's absence than the Giants are by Strickland's.

"They're a classy team", Bochy said. However, the most severe consequences may have come for Giants' outfielder Mike Morse, who was hit heavily with teammate Jeff Samardzija in the ensuing bench-clearing brawl.
