By the time he arrived after being airlifted to the hospital, he was in shock.

Scalise sustained injuries to internal organs, broken bones and severe bleeding after being shot in his left hip on Wednesday morning on a baseball field in a Washington suburb.

Sava said infection remains a risk. Since then, the lawmaker has undergone multiple surgeries and procedures to stop the bleeding and fix bone.

The doctor said Scalise has been sedated although the dosage has been turned down to allow him to respond to family members.

Sava estimates there are hundreds of bullet fragments in Scalise's pelvis and says doctors don't intend to try to remove them all, as that could cause more harm than good. Damage from a bullet occurs when it's traveling.

Scalise, meanwhile, continued to improve, his doctors said.

The No. 3 House Republican remains in intensive care and is likely to stay hospitalized for weeks.

"I feel a lot more optimistic than I did two or three days ago". The congressman's risk of death was now substantially lower because doctors have controlled the bleeding and his vital signs have stabilised.

After additional surgeries and rehabilitation, Scalise can be expected to walk "and hopefully run", Sava said.

"He was as critical as can be", Sava said.

Witnesses said the shooting would have been a "massacre" if not for the Capitol Police officers on duty as part of Scalise's security detail and the gunfight that ensued as local law enforcement arrived.

Hodgkinson was fatally shot during an exchange of gunfire with police during the rampage. "We salute them, and we also salute members of Alexandria Police, Fire and Rescue", Trump said. "Because of him and the tremendous pain and suffering he's now enduring. our country will perhaps become closer and more unified", Trump said. "We all owe Steve a big, big thank you". House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., paid a visit to his injured colleague at the hospital Friday.

Hodgkinson had a history of posting angry messages against Mr Trump and other Republicans on social media.

On Friday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation identified the guns found at the scene of the shooting as a 9 mm handgun and a 7.62-caliber rifle. Hodgkinson contacted both of his state's Democratic senators frequently, always through email links on their websites, spokesmen said Friday. Bailey was spotted Friday in the Capitol, on crutches and out of uniform, accepting congratulations from fellow officers.
