President Donald Trump then made a statement on the giant screen.

On Twitter, Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, blamed the shooting on "the leading cultural voices of the Left", but such political rhetoric was mostly drowned out by calls for unity and prayer.

The 16 House and Senate Democrats in the image tweeted out by Nevada Representative Ruben J. Kihuen had reportedly been practicing on a different baseball field when a crazed gunman opened fire at the Republican practice at Eugene Simpson Stadium Park in Alexandria, Va.

Vice President Mike Pence earlier on Thursday said he visited MedStar Washington Hospital Center, where Scalise was being treated. "ONE FAMILY", proclaimed a sign in the crowd. Sava didn't address what organs were damaged. "He remains in critical condition, but has improved in the last 24 hours".

The president, whose administration has been dogged by allegations of ties between his 2016 campaign and Russian Federation, later wrote two tweets suggesting that Democrat Hillary Clinton, whom he defeated in last November's election, should be under investigation instead of him.

Scalise should be able to walk again, Sava said. He has received multiple units of blood transfusion and will require additional operations.

Doctor Sava described Scalise's shot to his left hip as a devastating "trans-pelvic gunshot wound" from a high-velocity rifle.

"My dear friend Steve Scalise took a bullet for all of us", Trump said. "And because of him, and the tremendous pain and suffering he's now enduring - he's having a hard time, far worse than anybody thought - our country will perhaps become closer, more unified". Spicer said the couple also spoke to other members of the Capitol Police at the hospital. The Congressman is among five people wounded in the incident.

According to reports, the congressman was transferred to the hospital's Trauma Center, where he underwent immediate surgery, as well as an additional procedure to stop bleeding.

Prior to the update on Scalise's medical condition, an aide read a statement from Scalise's wife, Jennifer Scalise.

The Louisiana Republican was shot in the hip Wednesday morning in the baseball practice shooting by an IL man with grudges against President Donald Trump and the GOP. But he stopped short of providing specifics of Scalise's internal injuries.

The Republican congressional baseball team had been practising for Thursday's annual charity game between Democrats and Republicans when the gunman attacked shortly after 7am. Scalise is a member of the team and had been fielding balls at second base in preparation for the game when he was shot.
